#HourOfCode
The Hour of Code is coming to Langford (and to tens of millions of students across the world!)
Just what is the Hour of Code? Well, December 8-14 is Computer Science Week and to celebrate, people everywhere will be learning to code. Code is what makes everything possible with technology...creating software, apps, websites, etc. According to Code.org, computer science careers are in high demand, yet, students aren't learning about it. Solution? Participate in the #HourOfCode! It's fun, challenging, teaches problem solving skills, and no experience is needed!
For more information about the Hour of Code, please visit www.code.org
Try coding your own Angry Bird Game or maybe....
Try creating your own Flappy Bird Game?

Skype Experience!
Mrs. Siron and her 3rd graders enjoyed a skype session this morning with Samuel Ebwongu, Samuel's wife, Ruth, two students and a teacher from Soroti, Uganda. Mrs. Siron and Mr. Ebwongu first met through The Pencil Project, where the Langford family shipped two 30 lb. boxes of school supplies and playground toys, to Samuel's school, and are preparing to send two more similar boxes. Mrs. Siron and Mr. Ebwongu have continued to grow their relationship through Skype, where today, the students were able to share the traditions and holidays we celebrate in the U.S., while learning about the traditions in Uganda. Students were able to ask Mr. Ebwongu's students about their favorite food and recreational activities.
More pictures from this experience can be found on our school flickr site!

Kindergarten is Fire Smart!
October is designated Fire Safety Month and is sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) , but most schools and fire departments do a major focus on Fire Safety the second week of October. This past week, the Bear Creek Fire Department in Blythewood, SC visited Langford's Kindergartners. The kindergartners learned all about the tools a fireman uses to perform his/her job, the firetruck, and ways to stay safe if they ever were in a situation with a fire. Thank you again to the Bear Creek Fire Department!

Langford Fitness Challenge
Langford students, PreK-5, have been training for the Annual Langford Fitness Challenge: Running with the Labs. Students have learned the benefits of running, pacing themselves, and being healthy. Today, the students' hard work paid off! They all participated in the run and were able to raise more than $5,000 for our PTO! Congratulations Labs! Awesome Job! We would like to extend our thanks to Coach Reeves and his "Crew" as well as the many PTO members and parents that came out to help! THANK YOU!

Walk to School Day- Update!
Beautiful Weather- CHECK
Tennis Shoes- CHECK
Smiling Faces- CHECK
Walk to School Day was a SUCCESS!
Event History:
The South Carolina SRTS program launched their first South Carolina Walk to School Day event in the spring of 2012 and nearly 150 schools participated. In 2013, we had 188 schools participate! This spring we had another 184 registrants. It is clear that schools in the state are making walking celebrations part of their school culture, which is the ultimate goal for the Safe Routes to School program.
Many people are familiar with International Walk to School Day, which typically takes place every year the first Wednesday in October. In 2011, more than 130 schools across South Carolina participated in International Walk to School Day. In 2012, that number increased to over 200 schools. South Carolina had the highest rate of participation in the US according to the National Center for SRTS. In 2013, SC had 277 schools register and participate. Again, SC was ranked number one in participation in the US with one in every four schools participating! Walk to School Days are a great way for parents, students, school personnel, and other community members to directly experience the trip to school on foot as they walk and bike with students.

Message from Mrs. Jackson
You can tell Autumn is here! I hope you are all enjoying the cooler weather we are having. We have been learning a lot of cool things at LES. Students have been learning how to develop a hypothesis; identify the main idea of a text and support it with details, regrouping and the list could go on and on. Please take a moment and talk with your little one about some of the exciting things happening in the classroom this week.
It was wonderful to have so many of our parents attend parent teacher conferences on Thursday. It is our hope that teachers shared valuable information that will help your child be successful this year. If you were unable to make it, please contact your child's teacher and they will be happy to set up a time to meet with you. Parent Teacher conferences help to build strong partnerships between home and school, and are vital to the success of our children.
Skate Night at Skateland was a lot of FUN! We had a great "turn over"...young labs rolling around on four wheels. It was great to see all our children, teachers, and parents having a wonderful time. Congratulations to Ms. Ryant's class. They won the Pizza Party last night by having the most participation. This is just one of the many events sponsored by the PTO to help create fun and safe opportunities for the family/community to enjoy. If you missed Skate Night, do not worry, we are planning several more exciting events for you get involved in.
Thank you for all of your "Effort" in helping us raise money that will help support the Walk for Life and breast cancer research. I know that many of our labs are excited and cannot wait to see who will kiss the pig, Dr. Garner or Mr. Royce ( not Mrs. Jackson :) ) Have a wonderful weekend Langford Families. Please make sure you enjoy a little family time this weekend!

The afternoon is reserved for Parent/Teacher Conferences. Please remember to bring your I.D. so that you can properly sign in to Lobby Guard, Conference times are a vital part of building strong parent/teacher relationships while learning about your child's academic progress. We look forward to seeing all of our great parents tomorrow. If you you still need to request a conference, please contact your child's teacher. We will have an early dismissal, 11:30 am. The cafeteria will serve breakfast and lunch to our students. The dismissal procedures remain normal, in that if you have a change in transportation, we will need a written letter with a parent's contact number. We appreciate your assistance with early dismissal.
Tomorrow evening is this year's first Langford Family Skate Night at Skate Land, 800 Bookman Rd., Pontiac, SC. Admission and skate rental is only $5.00.
