Digital Citizenship Week

Digital Citizenship Week

October 15-19, 2018

"Digital citizens think critically about what they see online and learn to make their own smart choices online and in life. That means understanding the benefits and risks of sharing information, knowing the difference between a credible news source and a sponsored ad, and balancing screen time with other activities. Cultivating these skills is essential for anyone to thrive in today's increasingly tech-driven world. But digital citizens aren't born -- they're taught ..." (Common Sense Media)

Does your child have good digital manners? Do they know what is appropriate to share with others online? Do you have a family technology policy? Does your child know how to determine real news from fake news?

As a 1:1 District and an elementary school that is rich in technology, our goal is to integrate technology into our curriculum while teaching our students to protect themselves and their privacy. Common Sense Media is a site that works hard to assist parents, teachers, and students to meet this goal! Not only does it provide a wealth of resources on digital citizenship, but it also provides important information on movies, tv shows, apps, game, and websites! What do you want to learn more about?

Second Grade Assessment Infomation

CogAt and Iowa Assessment Info:

Students in second grade will take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) and Iowa Assessments (IA). We will test on October 29- November 2, 2018. The primary purpose of these assessments is to identify students for the Gifted and Talented programs (ALERT). The identification of gifted and talented students is a multi-step process which consists of screening and referral, assessment of eligibility, and placement. The tests will measure reasoning and problem-solving skills in the areas of 1) verbal, 2) quantitative (mathematics), 3) spatial or non-verbal (using shapes and figures to solve problems). It is important to make sure your child has a good night sleep, a healthy breakfast, and is at school on time during testing days.

Vasser Brothers Step Up

Mrs. Vasser (mom), Antonius (5th) and Ayden (3rd)
As the water was rising in the Low Country of South Carolina, the Vasser brothers began to step up as well. Antonius (5th grade) and Ayden (3rd grade) devised a plan to assist those that are in need due to  Hurricane Florence. The boys have made bracelets and have set up shop during their school breaks, collecting donations for Hurricane victims. If you are interested in making a donation or would like to learn more about how you can help, please contact Langford Elementary.
Setting up

We are very proud of the generous actions and the good citizenship the Vasser brothers have displayed. Great Job, Labs!
our Labs are eager to help out others in need

Weather Update

Severe Weather Update: Hurricane Michael

District administrators are monitoring Hurricane Michael and its possible impact on the Midlands area of South Carolina after it makes landfall in Florida. We receive regular weather updates from the Emergency Services Department of Richland County. Unsafe travel conditions for school buses as well as our employees, parents and student drivers may prompt delays or cancellations later this week. No decision has been made at this time. Please continue to monitor your email as well as the district’s website for updates.
