Native American Field Study
Third graders visited the Langford-Nord House earlier this week to enrich their study on Native Americans. The students were able to learn more about Native American tools, create their own pinch pottery, and talk with Chief Chavis. Thank you to everyone who helped make this wonderful trip possible!

Kindergarten is Fire Smart!
October is designated Fire Safety Month and is sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) , but most schools and fire departments do a major focus on Fire Safety the second week of October. This past week, the Bear Creek Fire Department in Blythewood, SC visited Langford's Kindergartners. The kindergartners learned all about the tools a fireman uses to perform his/her job, the firetruck, and ways to stay safe if they ever were in a situation with a fire. Thank you again to the Bear Creek Fire Department!

Langford Fitness Challenge
Langford students, PreK-5, have been training for the Annual Langford Fitness Challenge: Running with the Labs. Students have learned the benefits of running, pacing themselves, and being healthy. Today, the students' hard work paid off! They all participated in the run and were able to raise more than $5,000 for our PTO! Congratulations Labs! Awesome Job! We would like to extend our thanks to Coach Reeves and his "Crew" as well as the many PTO members and parents that came out to help! THANK YOU!

Walk to School Day- Update!

Walk to School Day was a SUCCESS!
Event History:
The South Carolina SRTS program launched their first South Carolina Walk to School Day event in the spring of 2012 and nearly 150 schools participated. In 2013, we had 188 schools participate! This spring we had another 184 registrants. It is clear that schools in the state are making walking celebrations part of their school culture, which is the ultimate goal for the Safe Routes to School program.
Many people are familiar with International Walk to School Day, which typically takes place every year the first Wednesday in October. In 2011, more than 130 schools across South Carolina participated in International Walk to School Day. In 2012, that number increased to over 200 schools. South Carolina had the highest rate of participation in the US according to the National Center for SRTS. In 2013, SC had 277 schools register and participate. Again, SC was ranked number one in participation in the US with one in every four schools participating! Walk to School Days are a great way for parents, students, school personnel, and other community members to directly experience the trip to school on foot as they walk and bike with students.
